Rural tourism in the Dão, from a historic manor house

An 18th-century country house in Vilar Seco, Nelas, for travellers who value silence, wine and the quiet beauty of inland Portugal.

Solar de Vilar Seco is a small rural boutique stay at the heart of the Dão wine region, a short drive from Nelas, Viseu and the foothills of Serra da Estrela. Here rural tourism is lived in an understated, elegant way — granite walls, wood, historic gardens and a slower pace of time.

Eight individually designed suites occupy the former manor of the Ponces de Carvalho family, alongside box-hedge gardens, a saltwater pool and easy access to wineries, walking trails and villages with centuries of history.

An 18th-century manor in the heart of the Dão

The original architecture has been carefully preserved — granite façade, private chapel, family crest and a cobbled inner courtyard — and restored to welcome guests who appreciate authenticity and heritage.

Each suite has its own character, with original furniture and views over the gardens or the courtyard. Rural tourism here feels like staying in a quiet family home rather than a hotel.

Historic gardens and a saltwater pool

The gardens unfold through avenues of box hedge, centuries-old camellias, chestnut trees and beds of lavender. A natural setting for a book, a slow breakfast outdoors or a long afternoon shaded from the sun.

The saltwater pool, discreetly integrated into the garden, is one of the most loved corners of the property in warmer months.

An ideal base to discover the Dão

From the manor you can visit Dão wineries, taste with local producers, explore the wine village of Santar, cycle the Ecopista do Dão or follow walking trails through the Serra do Caramulo.

We are about one hour from Porto via A25/A1, and close to Viseu, Coimbra and Serra da Estrela — a discreet location, yet right at the centre of inland Portugal.
