Guide · Dão wines
A practical route through the flagship estates of the Dão wine region and the Solar do Vinho do Dão in Viseu, organised from Solar de Vilar Seco in Nelas.
Founded in 1908, the Dão is one of Portugal’s oldest and most distinctive wine regions. It produces elegant, fresh, long-lived wines from grapes like Touriga Nacional, Encruzado, Jaen and Alfrocheiro, on granite soils at 400–500 m altitude.
Solar de Vilar Seco sits in Nelas, at the heart of this region, making it a natural base for wine tourism without long drives: most acclaimed wineries lie within 25 minutes.

Institutional headquarters of the Dão wine region, in a palace in Viseu. Tastings and sales from the main producers, permanent tasting room and guided visits.
Official site →1 day. Two wineries in the morning (we suggest Roques and Casa de Santar, close together), lunch in Santar or Nelas, and the Solar do Vinho do Dão in Viseu in the late afternoon.
2–3 days. Add Quinta da Pellada plus a third visit chosen with our help, a wine tasting, and additional producer visits or local suggestions.
Most Dão wineries require prior booking. We recommend confirming at least 48h in advance; the front desk helps with bookings, transfers and routes.
Solar de Vilar Seco is an 18th-century manor in Nelas, at the centre of the Dão wine region. Rooms and suites with contemporary rural style, historic gardens, pool and produce-led food — the ideal base for a calm wine-tourism programme.
Reds: Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz (Aragonez), Jaen and Alfrocheiro. Whites: Encruzado is the flagship, alongside Bical, Malvasia Fina and Cerceal.
Two days are enough for a first visit: one for 2–3 wineries in Nelas/Mangualde, another for the Solar do Vinho do Dão and Viseu old town. Three to four nights let you add Santar, local gastronomy and vineyard walks.
Directly at each winery after tasting, at the Solar do Vinho do Dão in Viseu (wines from dozens of producers) and at specialist wine shops in the city. Solar de Vilar Seco also keeps a curated regional selection for guests.
